Scotland is unique in it's castle tradition
and the North East has more castles per square mile than any other part of
the country. Varying from solid medieval fortresses to fantastic fairy
tale towers, many of these castles are
open to the public.
The castles below are just a few of the many to be found within a short drive of Easter Corrie.
Balvenie Castle
The Earls of Buchan ruled their ancient Celtic province in the 13th
century from Balvenie Castle in Glen Fiddich. They were later replaced
by supporters of Robert The Bruce, and subsequently King James II.
Finally Balvenie castle was abandoned in 1720.
Corgarff Castle
Beautifully restored Corgarff Castle dates from 1537 and is the
place where Margaret Forbes and her family were burned to death
in 1571 during a clan feud.
Known as the "Pearl of the North", nearby Ballindalloch
has been occupied continuously by the MacPherson-Grant family
since 1546 and has a fine collection of Spanish paintings.
Balmoral Castle
Balmoral Castle has been the Scottish home of the Royal Family since
it was purchased for Queen Victoria by Prince Albert in 1852. The
castle grounds, ballroom and coach house exhibitions are all open
to the public.
